| DESCRIPTION | The EU Accessibility Act, effective from 2025, aims to enhance accessibility for people with disabilities across various sectors, including audiovisual media and cultural spaces such as museums and heritage sites. It establishes minimum accessibility requirements to ensure that products and services are usable by all, thereby promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities within the European Union. This practical study-unit focuses on those services that make the arts and audiovisual media accessible for aurally and visually impaired persons. This is done through captioning and audio description techniques. The study unit provides the necessary practical know-how that can be applied in a professional context. Students practise subtitling for the d/Deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) for audiovisual content and audio description (AD), primarily for museums and heritage sites, applying a range of territory-specific and non-territory-specific guidelines. The study unit promotes integrated access and inclusive design approaches, emphasizing the importance of considering accessibility early in creation, writing, and production processes to ensure a seamless and engaging experience for all, while fostering innovation within the local cultural scene. Study-unit Aims: - To teach students media and arts access modes and techniques; - To draw awareness towards the need for inclusive arts and media and the need for professional training in the field; - To enable the implementation and development of accessibility in local media and cultural spaces. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - identify accessibility needs in cultural spaces; - identify ways to make audiovisual content more inclusive; - identify adequate access modes, techniques, and approaches. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - create subtitles for the d/Deaf and hard of hearing; - create audio descriptions for the blind and partially sighted; - create inclusive audio guides for cultural and artistic spaces; - provide accessibility consultancy to media broadcasters, filmmakers and producers, film directors, art historians, museum curators, and theatre directors.
